New Identity Emphasizes Stability, Dignity, and Hope in Affordable Housing

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025 — The North Carolina Housing Foundation and North Carolina Housing Services & Management Corporation, nonprofit leaders in affordable housing, have rebranded as ANCHOR — Affordable North Carolina Housing Organization. This pivotal step signals the organization’s renewed commitment to addressing North Carolina's housing crisis by expanding access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. With more than five decades of experience, ANCHOR is focused on ensuring that low- to moderate-income North Carolinians, including seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities, have the housing and support they need to thrive.

"ANCHOR represents the stability, support, and hope that have been the foundation of our work for more than 50 years," said Laurie Ingram, ANCHOR’s executive director. "Our new identity reflects both our legacy and our strengthened resolve to address North Carolina’s housing challenges. While our name has changed, our mission remains the same: ensuring access to safe, affordable housing and the services needed to create lasting, transformative change in the lives of those who need it most."

The rebrand to ANCHOR marks a new chapter for the organization, symbolizing its commitment to the critical role housing plays in people's lives. The new logo, featuring a key ring with a house key and an anchor, visually represents the security of safe, affordable housing. With colors purple and gray, the updated brand honors the legacy of the North Carolina Housing Foundation while looking to the future. The backronym ANCHOR stands for Affordable North Carolina Housing Organization, underscoring the nonprofit’s purpose and geographic focus.

Ingram, who assumed the role of executive director in August 2023, has played a key role in driving ANCHOR’s rebrand alongside a renewed vision and strategic plan for the unified organization. The strategic plan aims to expand affordable housing initiatives statewide. By leveraging partnerships with municipalities, developers, churches, and nonprofits, ANCHOR is well-positioned to tackle North Carolina’s housing crisis and create lasting, transformative change for communities across the state.

ANCHOR currently owns 27 properties across 13 cities in North Carolina and manages a total of 46 properties across 17 cities in North and South Carolina. Together these properties house more than 1,900 residents. Among the 13 ANCHOR-owned properties in Winston-Salem are Gladstone Apartments, Goler Manor Apartments, Granville Place and Granville Plaza Apartments, University Court and University Place Apartments, and Veterans Helping Veterans Heal, a residential facility with services for U.S. veterans.

With its new identity, ANCHOR is addressing the housing crisis through innovative solutions, exemplified by its "Housing First" philosophy. This approach prioritizes immediate access to stable housing while connecting residents — including seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities — to essential support services, tackling the root causes of housing instability and empowering individuals to achieve long-term success.

Founded in 1968 as Winston-Salem Housing, Inc., ANCHOR has continually evolved to meet community needs and remains a trusted leader in affordable housing development and advocacy. Operating through two divisions — ANCHOR Development, which focuses on creating and preserving affordable housing, and ANCHOR Services & Management, which provides training, technical support, and property management services — the organization has constructed more than 2,500 housing units across North Carolina. The organization has twice been recognized by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency for Achievements in Affordable Housing.
